Why Your Lighting Portfolio Isn’t Getting You Hired — and How to Change That

Tutorial / 20 May 2025

I used to think my lighting portfolio was solid with cinematic shots, decent renders, cool environments.
But I wasn’t getting replies. No callbacks. No interviews.
Turns out, beautiful lighting isn’t enough in today’s game industry

As time progressed I realized some key things that needed to be accepted

  • The industry is competitive and flooded with talent. More so now with companies shutting down and massive layoffs. See image below.

  • Studios are hiring people who can solve problems like lumens, light mass baking for VR, exposure mismatches, light mass noise, GI leaks, not just make pretty shots

  • Many artists don’t know when to use Lumen vs CPU vs GPU, and that shows in their scenes

  • It is really difficult to learn art, tech and innovation alone.

Lay offs since 2022 are increasing.

I built my first lighting course a few years ago and recently I developed the Ultimate Game Lighting Education course based on the workflows I’ve used in production on games like Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, As Dusk Falls, and Off The Grid to name a few.
Since launching 2021, I’ve seen students land jobs at EA Games, Super Massive, Retro Studios, Ubisoft, Avalanche, Studio Gobo, 11 Bit Studios, and more, not by doing more art, but by lighting smarter.

"Amit and the lessons he taught me in my mentorship were key to landing my first job in the industry. He helped me build upon my composition and color skills while also introducing a lot of the technical aspects of the career.." - Thomas

"For a long time I was looking for various training courses, tutorials, etc. that would allow me to enter the world of Lighting Artist in the game development studio. After many weeks of searching and conversations, I came across Lighting Bot Academy. I knew then that I was in the right place. I received a good dose of information and a strong foundation to start my adventure as a Lighting Artist." - Dawid

Even if you already took another course similar to these students you will grow and benefit many times through my course material.

In case you missed it, be sure to watch my light shaft tutorial.

In this video I show you step by step on how you can setup a light shaft material with edge fade, camera fade and more. It should be enough for you to use or improve upon for your usage. I go through some of these nodes: eye adaption, time, speed, gradient, texcoordinate, breakout2component, power, depth fade, scene depth, substract, pixel depth, divide, camera depth, fresnel and so on.

FREE Blade Runner 2049 Atmosphere Lighting Tutorial

General / 07 January 2025

In this video which is built on previous video about Intro to Overcast Lighting using atmospheric settings mostly, I am showing how you can use it again a long with the fog to achieve similar look as Blade Runner 2049 Orange Desert Look.

This time I go a bit more into detail in a structured manner showing how the settings alter the look of my Blade Runner scene, so you can better understand how it impacts the decisions you might need to make yourself in the future.

Topic we cover is how it was done in the movie, sunlight, cloud cover, fog density, exponential fog, atmospheric particles, mie scattering, mie absorption, mie anisotropy, mie exponential distribution, rayleigh scattering, rayleigh scattering distribution, sun angle, color temperature, multiscattering, atmospheric height, multiscattering, exposure settings, why other methods is worst than my method etc.

FREE Overcast Lighting Tutorial using Atmosphere Settings Physically Correct

General / 05 January 2025

In this video I give you a brief introduction on how to do lighting using atmospheric settings. Most  videos I have seen depend solely on directional light, sky light and post process to achieve an overcast lighting. I will explain what to keep in mind for overcast lighting or generally when lighting exterior to replicate realistic settings. I mention Atmosphere Height, Multiscattering, Mie Anisotrophy, Mie Exponential Distribution, Rayleigh Scattering, Exposure value setting, sunlight lux setting, extinction scale, scattering distribution and more. You should be able achieve  results like below that supports technical artist and graphics programmer later down the line when more complex tools or calculations are added into the pipeline.

Part 2 - Unreal Lighting Course - Overcast - Affordable Pricing

Tutorial / 13 August 2023

Hey,

I like making extra income on the side as much as anyone else but I love helping people in the process. I see a lot of people struggling, getting laid off and it is even harder to pay for premium content. My content is on premium pricing and level normally, worth 500 dollars to 4000 dollars.

But...what I don't like is people not getting access to this content in a time of need. So, I am giving Part 2 of our known proven Lighting Course for less than your lunch food right now. If you didn't grab part 1 it is recommended to do that first, as it builds upon it!

I have had 500 people so far learning for free this year and I have seen people teaching it forward, getting work, and even promotion. So, I assure you every part uses a different approach to explain the same concept for maximum impact.

So, if you like the content consider liking, following, sharing, and mentioning it. If you want to really support more content then consider joining as a member. Below are various links just click the one you are comfortable with, or to decide what works best for you.

PBR Unreal Lighting Tutorial Update

News / 07 December 2022

I have added some unedited videos to the unreal lighting course over at Lighting Bot with the intent to show the process, iteration, thought process and mindset on how to light. As you initially go through the course to learn exposure, ev, physically correct values, editing poor materials and do as little as possible for game ready lighting environment. However, it does not mean it stops there. In these new videos, I show at the end of each time of day how I change up everything or tweak minor things to really push the story, mood, intent, and possibilities of one single environment. So, it went from just doing 4 to almost 8 ways of lighting one single environment to really push you to the next level.

Here are some sample images of the new videos.

For people who want to save time and money with customized mentorship. Here is a sample testimonial which you can find more of on the website Lighting Bot.
