Why Your Lighting Portfolio Isn’t Getting You Hired — and How to Change That

Tutorial / 20 May 2025

I used to think my lighting portfolio was solid with cinematic shots, decent renders, cool environments.
But I wasn’t getting replies. No callbacks. No interviews.
Turns out, beautiful lighting isn’t enough in today’s game industry

As time progressed I realized some key things that needed to be accepted

  • The industry is competitive and flooded with talent. More so now with companies shutting down and massive layoffs. See image below.

  • Studios are hiring people who can solve problems like lumens, light mass baking for VR, exposure mismatches, light mass noise, GI leaks, not just make pretty shots

  • Many artists don’t know when to use Lumen vs CPU vs GPU, and that shows in their scenes

  • It is really difficult to learn art, tech and innovation alone.

Lay offs since 2022 are increasing.

I built my first lighting course a few years ago and recently I developed the Ultimate Game Lighting Education course based on the workflows I’ve used in production on games like Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, As Dusk Falls, and Off The Grid to name a few.
Since launching 2021, I’ve seen students land jobs at EA Games, Super Massive, Retro Studios, Ubisoft, Avalanche, Studio Gobo, 11 Bit Studios, and more, not by doing more art, but by lighting smarter.

"Amit and the lessons he taught me in my mentorship were key to landing my first job in the industry. He helped me build upon my composition and color skills while also introducing a lot of the technical aspects of the career.." - Thomas

"For a long time I was looking for various training courses, tutorials, etc. that would allow me to enter the world of Lighting Artist in the game development studio. After many weeks of searching and conversations, I came across Lighting Bot Academy. I knew then that I was in the right place. I received a good dose of information and a strong foundation to start my adventure as a Lighting Artist." - Dawid

Even if you already took another course similar to these students you will grow and benefit many times through my course material.
